Drafting

Drafting

Our film opening has come along way with many changes and tweaks along the way. We decided to cut and change various sections of our original version, because of availability, restrictions and to establish clearer.

Establishing improvements

In order to establish narrative, character and back story in 2 minutes is difficult, Adelle and myself decided to change our original sequence in order to cut down the time on establishing just the character. This cut down allowed us to establish back story and narrative just as well as the character. The balance of establishment makes for a better film opening.

Availability

The beginning sequence had to be completely changed due to the Prison's rules and regulations. We were unable to film in the location we hoped to for security obstruction issues. Adelle and myself were disappointed with this decision as we were all ready to film and thought it would look really good. With this change in plan, we had to find a new location that did the same job. This wasn't always a bad thing however, the fact we needed to use less time allowed us to take a step back and think about the scene properly. We eventually decided to establish narrative clearer with a simple sequence of Michael walking across a field away from a prison in the background. This sequence we were much more happier with in the end.

Restrictions

In order to establish multiple aspects better we needed to cut down time on certain sequences in order to hit the 2 minute time cap and effectively establish multiple aspects. Sequences such as the bar scene and beginning sequence in front of the prison had to suffer in order to achieve this goal.

The re-drafting we had to do affected storyboards, scripts, shot lists and even our title sequence.

Our title sequence had a 6 second gap maximum to fill. This was not long enough for the moving image effect we were hoping for. Instead however we chose a still because we already had a moving image ident. This decision benefited us with the timing restriction.
