Independent
An Independent film is a professional film production resulting in a feature film that is produced mostly or completely outside of the major film studio system. An independent film is usually a low budget film that exhibits at independent cinemas and hardly ever gets exhibited at multiplexes. They would usually be distributed by independent distributors as well.
Adelle and myself believed at first that our film would be an independent film, distributed by an independent distributor because of the use of minimal effects, not so popular genre and low budget filming.
Blockbuster
A Blockbuster denotes a very popular or successful production. The production of which is usually high budget that exhibits at all major multiplexes worldwide. The estimated return on a blockbuster has to be 2 ad 1/2 the production value to be perceived as a successful film.
After evaluating our work and looking at how well films we inspired to be like did at the box office, we decided that in fact we would be a blockbuster. As we progressed with research and developed our film, we added a famous writer and producer which added to the value of the film. Our actors would be perceived as famous which would be a contributing factor of a blockbuster.
Adelle and myself decided to research similar crime films to see who distributed them, to give a good idea on who we should get to distribute our film.
Oceans eleven, twelve, thirteen - Warner Brothers
Rock n Rolla - Warner Brothers
Revolver - Warner Brothers
Snatch - Sony, Columbia
The Bank Job - Lionsgate, Paramount
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - Columbia, Universal
As you can see, Warner Brothers Pictures had the most domination over the crime based films that Adelle and myself studied. This meant that they already have experience in distributing our genre film and also have worked with Guy Richie before. We decided to go with Warner Brother pictures and New Line Cinema because the conglomerate that owns Warner Brothers is Time Warner, and they also own New Line Cinema. This is using vertical integration to advertise and distribute effectively.
